How to Describe the Centers in a Pre-K Classroom

A seasoned prekindergarten teacher looks around her classroom, and the purpose of each center is clear. But to those others who enter the classroom without prior knowledge of learning centers, the purposes may be unclear, leaving the centers to look more like themed play areas. The purpose and intent of learning centers are based upon learning standards from the state and school levels, which facilitate learning through hands-on play.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of each center on a sentence strip. Although centers are typically created based upon subjects, learning objectives or themes, you can add creativity to the name of the center. A science center can be called "The Science Center," "The Science Exploration Center," "Young Scientist's Center" or another name along these lines.

    • 2

Create a placard for each center with sentence strips and hang the card in the appropriate center.

    • 3
Organize your thoughts to be informative and concise.

Determine the purpose or objective of each center. To help your thinking process, write down these points so they're more easily organized and summarized.

    • 4

Form one sentence to summarize your points for each center. A one-sentence description is quick and short enough for parents to read while picking up children or for other visitors to scan and understand in an efficient manner. For the art center you can write "We explore various art mediums while learning colors and strengthening fine motor muscles."
