How to Arrange a Learning Center in the Early Headstart Classroom

Head Start is a federally funded program to provide preschool services to young children from low-income families. Early Head Start grew out of the Head Start program and serves pregnant women and infants from birth to age three. Early Head Start programs include child care centers as well as services for pregnant women. Like other centers, Early Head Start programs often organize their classrooms around learning centers. Common types of learning centers for this age include a block center, art center, home center and a reading center.

Instructions

    • 1

Designate an area of the classroom for each center. All of the materials for that center belong in that area. Place quieter centers near each other and away from louder centers.

    • 2

Set the center apart from the others using rugs or beanbag chairs. Arrange the shelving so that it is easy for students to access.

    • 3

Place the center's materials in containers or on the shelves in the area for students to use. Place the sign for that center on the shelf or in that area.

    • 4

Teach children how to use the materials in the centers. Demonstrate what you want them to do and what you do not want them to do.
