Assemble the kitchen center in a corner of the room. The kitchen center is beneficial in every preschool class, because it allows children to practice using utensils and fosters sharing skills. To set this up you will need a kid-sized kitchen set. This should include a stove/oven, sink, and/or refrigerator. To accompany the kitchen set it is important to have plastic food, plates and utensils (fork, spoon) for the children to use for play.
Prepare the art center in an area free from a lot of foot traffic. The art center should include various art materials. These materials may include but are not limited to markers, coloring pencils, crayons, paint, multi-purpose paper, construction paper, and colored paper. Additional accessories for the art center may include glitter, pipe cleaners, play dough, and Popsicle sticks. This center encourages students to use their imagination and work on fine motor skills.
Assemble the block center on or near a carpeted area if possible, because the blocks can be loud on hard floors. The block center helps teach rote counting skills, spatial intelligence and sharing skills. To set up a block center you will need different types of building blocks, such as large wooden blocks, plastic blocks, Legos, Lincoln Logs, and/or soft foam blocks.
Create the book center in a somewhat secluded area, away from the other centers to foster a quiet atmosphere. The book center encourages students' imagination, introduces literacy skills, and phonics. The books you include in this center should be age-appropriate and filled with pictures. Also there must be soft, comfortable places to sit down.
