Place cubbies near the entryway so children can store their personal items, dress or undress. A washable rug should be laid in this area for wet or muddy shoes. Jackets can be hung on pegs 40 inches high or on a child-size coat rack.
Put two children's tables 2 feet apart near a sink as a wet or messy area where the flooring is easy to clean. Add four chairs per table. Arts and crafts are done in this area and it is ideal for eating on occasions when eating outside is not possible. A science center would be in the location also.
Lay a large rug down in the center of the room as a center for circle time, dance and other gross motor-skills activities. A freestanding blackboard or a dry-erase board is optional for the area. Themes, day of the week and other information can be written on it.
Place two children's tables 2 feet apart near the center of the room at the opposite side of the wet area. Add four chairs per table. This center is a dry zone for playing or academic work, such as reading with a teacher.
Set up a quiet playing zone in a corner with manipulatives, such as blocks and puzzles. Add pillows and blankets for children to relax in. Place other toys on a back wall on shelves and bins.
Place a loft space with cushions in the other corner opposite from the block area. Children can rest in the loft space and use it for imaginative play. Dress-up clothes and a play kitchen are set by this area.
