How to Have a Nature Scavenger Hunt With Early Preschool Children

Preschool children learn best when the material is relevant to their lives and interests, and when they are actively involved in a creative activity. Taking preschoolers on a nature scavenger hunt around their neighborhood or school playground would fulfill both of these needs. Learning about the natural world in their own backyards is an important science concept for preschoolers, and one that can be fun to introduce.

Instructions

    • 1

Walk through your backyard or school playground and keep an eye out for the native plants, insects and animals that are living there. Explore your surroundings without children at this time.

    • 2

Take photos of several different types of wildlife, flowers, trees and plants while on your walk. Good examples are different types of leaves, pine needles or pine cones, ant hills, wildflowers, tree bark and grass.

    • 3

Print several copies of each of the pictures you took while exploring your backyard.

    • 4

Punch a hole in each printed photograph. Collect the photos on a round binder clip. Make several copies of these books, one for each student in your preschool class.

    • 5

Write each student's name on a paper lunch bag to deliver the book.

    • 6

Distribute the scavenger hunt books to the students as they arrive in the classroom for the day. Tell the children to find as many of the things from the book as they can.

    • 7

Encourage the children to collect things of interest that they may see as they walk through nature, such as rocks, leaves and fallen twigs. Use these items later in a nature collage to recall your special nature scavenger hunt activity.
