Early Childhood Development Concepts

Developmentally appropriate practices help to improve a young child's development. Children who participate in such exercises tend to have less stress, be more motivated, have better work habits and demonstrate better social skills when they start school.
  1. Physical Development

    • Gross motor activities help the development of the large muscles in the body. By simply playing outside, children achieve gross motor development. Fine motor skills enable the small muscles to develop. Activities such as coloring or working on a puzzle aids in development.

    Cognitive development

    • Cognitive development is the development of thinking skills. Stimulate the child's cognitive skills by exploring interesting topics, playing memory games and encouraging him to use his imagination when playing.

    Verbal Development

    • Verbal development is really a cognitive development, but it can be developed extensively just by talking to the child. Singing, reading and conversing helps to develop strong verbal skills.

    Socioemotional Development

    • Socioemotional development involves the changes in a child's relationship with people and the changes in their emotions and personality. Encourage development simply by providing opportunities to play with friends.

    Splintered Development

    • Splintered development occurs when a child excels in one area of development but is weak in another. Parents should recognize the areas of high achievement while continuously working to strengthen the development of the weak area.
