How to Promote Literacy in Early Childhood Centers

Teaching a love of books and reading should begin long before a child actually learns how to read. Early childhood refers to a child's life from birth until she starts school, usually around 5 years old. To promote literacy in an early childhood center you should create a classroom environment focused on literacy. This only requires a little bit of effort. A comfortable classroom library and a literacy-centric schedule are all that are needed.

Instructions

  1. The Classroom Library

    • 1

Designate an area of the classroom as "the library." A special area for reading will show children that reading is an important and special activity.

    • 2

Place comfortable furniture in the classroom library. Bean bag chairs, pillows, children's couches and even adult-sized couches can be used.

    • 3

Fill the library with age-appropriate books. For very young children, cloth books can be used.

    The Classroom Schedule

    • 4

Schedule at least two or three blocks each day when children can read in the classroom library. The amount of time should depend on the children's ages. Older children should have longer library times. One of the teachers or assistants should join the children and read with them.

    • 5

Read out loud to your children at least once a day. Morning meeting or circle time is ideal for reading aloud to the children.

    • 6

Prompt the children to read aloud to each other or to baby dolls. Even young toddlers will enjoy "reading" books to baby dolls. Older children can take turns as the "teacher" and read aloud to the class.
