Locate the library's card catalog computer. There may be more than one, and should be set up so that the catalog is the default page. If the screen fails to display the search function of the catalog, click the button for "home," and the program should return to the starting page.
Look at the screen. Card catalogs set up especially for children may display a set of click-able pictures that show different genres, subjects or topics under which books are categorized, such as animals, science, sports and fantasy. Programs vary by library, but all share similarities. Children's catalogs usually only display books and library materials specifically for children.
Click on a picture and a list of titles owned by that particular library pertaining to that subject or genre will appear. Click on a title to bring up additional information, location and status of the material.
Return the program to the beginning or home page of necessary. If the card catalog is not set up with picture icons, it will have some form of search box with a drop-down menu. The default search on a card catalog is usually keyword, which is the same as subject from the old-fashioned card catalogs. Options for title and author are also standard. Depending on the library, you may also have the option to search by call number, Series title, LCCN (Library of Congress Number), LC subject, LC children's subject, Sears subject and ISBN.
Choose which search function you want to use. Enter terms, title or author's name (usually last name first), pertaining to that choice. Click enter or search depending on the program.
Look at the results that display on the screen after the search is complete. If nothing matches your entry, it will come up to the closest matches. Some programs have a spell check function, or will give a "did you mean?" result if you enter text that is misspelled, or not in any of the records. Click on a record to open it and display additional information, location and status of the material.
Ask for help if you need it. Library staff will show you how to use the card catalog, and find materials in the library if you need assistance.
