How to Teach the Colors of the Rainbow

A rainbow can occur in the sky when there is just the right mixture of sunlight and moisture in the air. This is why rainbows are often visible shortly after a rainstorm when the sun finally starts to shine again. Teaching a child about the colors of the rainbow can be made more interesting when you incorporate lessons about the colors of the rainbow. These colors are very specific and are always in the same order.

Instructions

    • 1

Show each color of the rainbow. You can use things such as markers or pieces of construction paper to demonstrate the colors.

    • 2

Put the colors in order. A rainbow always has the same color order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.

    • 3

Say the name of each color out loud while writing it in a vertical line on a board. This will create the letters R-O-Y-G-B-I-V at the beginning of the vertical line.

    • 4

Explain that these letters can be remembered by remembering the phonetic pronunciation for R-O-Y-G-B-I-V as Roy G. Biv.

    • 5

Add activities to your lesson. Allow the children you are teaching to draw their own rainbow with colored markers, for example, or let them construct a rainbow out of colored paper.
