How to Make Your Own Tracing Sheets for Numbers

Teachers and homeschooling parents can create their own number-tracing sheets with a simple word processor or Internet application. Tracing pages are excellent practice for learning to write numbers, and improving penmanship. You can control how many times a child should trace the number, how big the number will be, and how soon you can transition the numbers to a smaller size to improve fine-motor function.

Instructions

  1. Create a New Document in a Word Processing Program

    • 1
Learning to trace numbers is the first step to writing them independently.

Go to the formatting palette in your word processing program. Change the font color to the lightest gray available. In the Text or Font size tool, change the size to the highest number available. Likely that is '72' In the Font size tool, manually change that to 200 by typing "200".

    • 2

Write a number with your keyboard. For example: 2. Place as many instances of the number on the pages as you want. Change the Text font to make smaller numbers as the kids learn to write them big. This will help with handwriting and fine-motor function.

    • 3

Print the sheet when you are done, and have the child trace the light gray numbers with a crayon or marker.

Using the Internet to Make Tracing Sheets

    • 4

An easier way to create tracing sheets that use dotted lines (instead of shading like the example above) is to use a website that creates tracing sheets for you.

    • 5

      Go to http://kidzone.ws/tracers.

    • 6

Click on the type of theme you want the tracer page to have. Animals are always a plus with kids.

    • 7

Next, in the lines provided, write the numbers you want the kids to learn. You can write the number once, or several times so that it appears in a string on the page.

      For example:

      2

      2 2 2 2

The children then have multiple instances of the same number to trace.

Click on "Make Tracer Pages." The information your provided is then generated into a sheet with the theme you selected. Print the sheets and have the children trace their numbers with a crayon or marker.
