How to Make Your Own Speed Drill for Multiplication

Multiplication is one of the more essential and basic operations in mathematics. Students are taught multiplication tables in elementary school. While larger multiplication is done mostly by hand, students are expected to remember the multiplication values of numbers one through 10. The memorization of these values can be reinforced with speed drills. Speed drills are timed worksheets that contain many multiplication calculations. Over time, students who perform these speed drills will become very proficient in multiplication tables.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the range of the multiplication table. Most tables cover the numbers one through 10. These tables cover all multiplications from "1 x 1" to "10 x 10."

    • 2

Calculate the number of multiplication possibilities. For the table of "1 x 1" to "10 x 10," there are 100 different multiplications.

    • 3

Create a grid on a piece of paper that contains enough boxes for each multiplication. So in the example, 10 by 10 grid is used.

    • 4

Enter each of the multiplications into a box on the grid. Be sure to place them in random order.

    • 5

Set a time limit for the drill. An accurate time limit can be found by taking the test yourself. Add a few extra seconds for students that may be new to the tables.
