Sing songs like "This Old Man" and "The Ants Go Marching" to teach numbers one through 10. Use hand gestures to add a visual component to enhance learning. Hold up different numbers of fingers that correspond to the different numbers as you sing.
Use tactile feedback to help children learn numbers. Activities like table-top puzzles, floor puzzles and games like hopscotch allow children to feel and see the shape of the numbers as they say them aloud.
Talk about numbers during daily activities. Children can learn numbers by counting body parts while dressing, the number of people in the family and the number of different food items on the plate at mealtime.
Use flashcards to associate the shape of each number with its name. Look at picture books and count items on a particular page. Use crayons and finger paints to draw each number to learn its shape.
