How to Draw a Tree for a Kindergarten

Kindergarten children draw items from their own perspective. Trees are generally perceived as having huge rounded trunks that are proportionally much wider at the bottoms than at the tops. Many kindergarten tree drawings also fail to represent any of the limbs or branches. The objects resemble giant lollipops with large brown sticks disappearing into round or oval billows of green. Kindergarten art teachers use common shapes to help children draw trees somewhat more realistically.

Instructions

    • 1

Help children draw trees by beginning with a large letter "Y" shape that is almost as tall as the paper. Use black or brown crayon for a common trunk color on your drawing, but allow kindergarten art students to use any desired color for the trunk.

    • 2

Draw smaller "Y" shapes on the split tops of the large "Y" shape. Make the small "Y" shapes at various angles to appear as branches on the limbs.

    • 3

Color around the branches and limbs with green, red orange or yellow seasonal leaf colors, or indicate white snow linings along the upper parts of the bare branches. Accept any color that kindergarten children draw around the branches of trees.
