How to Learn Shapes for Kindergarten

As with learning anything new for the first time, learning shapes can be difficult in Kindergarten. With repetition and persistence, learning becomes easier for a child. Children learn by doing, so having a plan to learn shapes can help create ideas and knowledge in their brains. Making the learning task fun can also help the child retain the information better.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate construction paper by color. This exercise will also help with colors.

    • 2

Cut each piece of construction paper into a different shape. The first round of shapes should be cut by an adult and then after that the child can mimic the shapes by cutting them out with child-safe scissors. The shapes should include square, triangle, rectangle, diamond, circle and any other shape you would like to include; these can be cut in all sizes.

    • 3

Give the cutouts to your children and let them trace the shapes onto a separate piece of paper and cut the shapes out with your supervision using the child-safe scissors.

    • 4

Write the shape name on the shape cutouts that the children have done. Have them help write the names of the shapes on each shape.

    • 5

Repeat the craft again. Children learn by repetition. This will help them to write, recognize and learn shapes.
