How to Learn English in Kindergarten

Learning English from a young age has many benefits. Not only does it help students to retain the information, it also allows them to communicate with other native English speakers. Learning English in a kindergarten classroom should always be fun and exciting for the students in order to create an active interest in the language. Lessons do not need to be fancy or expensive; sometimes the most effective lessons are also the simplest ones.

Instructions

    • 1

Surround the classroom with alphabet letters to stimulate English learning. Children learn through personal experience and their environment, so making it interactive will help them to engage in the activity. For instance, having an alphabet tree or an alphabet train will peak their interests and encourage them to find all the letters of the tree or place the letters in sequential order on the train.

    • 2

Incorporate bright and bold colors into the alphabet letters on display. The colors are interesting and eye-catching for young children. Using colors in any English-learning activity will make it fun and exciting for the kindergarten students.

    • 3

Read simple storybooks as a class and encourage students to read along. Have students practice sounding out words and then explain what those words mean. Asking simple questions in English based on the pictures of the storybook helps them follow the story.

    • 4

Sing simple songs in English, such as "Mary Had a Little Lamb" or an "ABC" song. You may even make up your own songs to fit the students' interests and English level. As you sing together, have the students play toy instruments such as a bell or whistle.

    • 5

Practice writing words and alphabet letters with the students. Repetitive practice helps the kindergarten students to not only learn to write English words and letters, but it also helps them to retain that information. Just because it is repetitive does not mean it is boring. Writing in colored markers, glitter pens or writing their own short story share all the same benefits, while keeping learning fun.

    • 6

Interact with the students on a daily basis in English. Establishing classroom English phrases such as, "May I go to the bathroom?" or "What is that?" helps students to learn common phrases. If there is a friend or family member who speaks English fluently, invite him to the class to interact with the students so that they may practice what they have learned.
