Work with your child every day on some sort of reading activity. Reading is a learned skill and some students will face issues when trying to master it.
Perform vocabulary-building exercises with your child by picking up some kindergarten-level flash cards or taking turns reading to one another from an appropriate book.
Encourage a positive view of reading and allow your child to pursue books that interest him. It is easier to motivate a child to read when the material is interesting and engaging.
Stay positive and encourage breaks when the child displays boredom.
Troubleshoot problems as they arise. Speak with your child about the different parts of reading that prove difficult for her and create daily exercises to improve those areas. For instance, if your child expresses frustration pronouncing certain words, you can play a game each day where you both repeat some of the trouble words.
