How to Learn Games for Kindergarten

During kindergarten, children begin learning basic skills that they will continue to use throughout their educational careers. When teaching children of this age, instruction should be varied in order to keep them interested, fostering a greater understanding of topics and skills. Games serve as an ideal teaching tool for kindergarteners, as they capture the attention of students and make learning enjoyable.

Instructions

  1. Greater Than, Less Than War

    • 1

Use a marker to write numbers on individual index cards. Write numbers for which your students have an awareness. For example, if your students have an awareness of the numbers one through 20, write numbers from this set on the index cards.

    • 2

Shuffle the cards and deal the entire set of cards between a pair of students. Instruct the two students to place their cards in a face-down pile in front of them.

    • 3

Instruct both children to turn over the top card on their piles at the same time. The person who reveals a card with a higher number takes both cards and sets them aside. If the cards that are flipped over reveal numbers of equal value, the students flip over the next card in their piles. They continue flipping over cards until someone reveals a higher number; this person takes all of the cards that have been flipped over.

    • 4

Inform children that they are to continue playing until all of the cards have been flipped over. The player with the most cards wins the game.

    Sight Word Game

    • 5

Use a marker to write sight words on individual index cards. Write sight words that you have worked on with your students to promote recognition of the words.

    • 6

Spread the cards on the ground, face-up. Spread the cards out so that they are not directly on top of one another, yet not too spread apart.

    • 7

Divide your class into two teams. Instruct each team to form a single-file line in front of the cards. Provide the first player on each team with a bean bag.

    • 8

Invite the first player on each team to throw his bean bag toward the cards on the floor. After throwing their bean bags, they must read the word written on the card. If they are able to read the word, they earn a point for the team; if they are not able to read the word, they step to the back of the line.

    • 9

Continue playing the game in this manner. Play two or three rounds of this game, allowing each student to have two or three chances to read the sight words. The team with the most points wins the game.
