How to Create Your Own Alphabet for Kindergarten

Alphabet cards often adorn the walls of kindergarten classrooms, and they add a decorative as well as educational touch. The alphabet is a main focus of instruction in kindergarten. During this grade, children learn how to identify and name the letters and also begin to learn the sounds that each of the letters make. Instead of purchasing a set of prefabricated alphabet wall cards, save a few bucks and create your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Print out pictures of items that begin with each of the 26 letters of the alphabet. Pictures to consider include an apple, balloon, cat, dog and so forth.

    • 2

Place one piece of 8-by-10 poster board in a vertical position on a flat surface. With a marker, neatly print a bold upper- and lowercase letter "A" on the upper portion of the piece of poster board.

    • 3

Cut out the picture that represents the letter "A." Spread glue on the back of the picture. Press the picture onto the bottom portion of the piece of poster board underneath the letter.

    • 4

Use the same process to create cards for each letter of the alphabet. To make the cards more colorful, consider writing each letter with a different colored marker.

    • 5

Hang the alphabet cards on a wall in your classroom. Hang the cards in a place that is easily seen. Make sure the cards are hung in alphabetical order.
