Games for Kid to Learn How to Count

When teaching children how to do something, one of the most successful ways to do it is by using games. Games allow kids to learn while they are having fun. They almost don't even recognize that they are learning. With tasks such as counting that are learned from repetition, different kinds of games allow kids to continuously have fun in the learning process.
  1. Board Games

    • Chutes and Ladders, Hi Ho Cherry-O and Memory are all learning board games, and can all aid in learning how to count. In Chutes and Ladders, the players have to spin, then count spaces to get to the top of the board to win. In Hi Ho Cherry-O, players race each to get 10 cherries in their basket to be the winner. For Memory, everyone keeps track of the numbers of matches they have to see who wins.

    Group Games

    • What time is it Mr. Fox? is a popular game where the person who's "it" gets to count to a number of their choice (from 1 to 12). Listening to each other take turns counting helps with the repetition needed for memorizing numbers and their order. Another group game is Hide and Go Seek. For younger children, parents may need to help them with their counting, but this game is fun and exciting, so they are always eager to play.

    Dice Games

    • Children's Yahtzee has kids counting faces of characters or spots on the dice, then writing down the corresponding number. Toy Story is one of many versions that allows the kids to keep track by counting their favorite characters' faces. Activity Village, a popular children's learning website, lists several variations of dice games that children can play to help their counting skills. Kids love dice and these games could be the fast track to counting a child needs.

    Online Games

    • Now that most homes and schools have computers, children learn very early to use them for education and gaming purposes. Many places online have counting games that assist children in their computer skills and counting at the same time. For instance, Learning Planet gives children access to three counting games, and PBS Kids has counting games based on children's favorite shows. In fact, many educational websites have early counting games, and a child's favorite television channel usually has games based on the shows they feature.
