Free Educational Counting Games for Kids

Learning to count is an important step in learning math and using numbers. Sometimes it can be difficult to make counting fun for young children, especially when it doesn't seem like much fun at all to begin with. That's where counting games come in. Whether on the computer or on a piece of paper, counting games make learning to count interesting and exciting, rather than a chore.
  1. Fishy Count

    • Fishy Count is a Flash-based game that can be played right in your web browser. This fun game features cartoonish drawings of an underwater scene. Fishy Count gives the child 10 different sets of fish for counting and displays 3 answers to choose from. Upbeat Caribbean music plays while a new sea animal floats across the screen when the right answer is selected. A wrong answer results in the game helping the child to count each fish. While Fishy Count is repetitive, the bright colors and cheerful music should keep small children interested and entertained.

    Count the Cubes

    • Count the Cubes is another flash game playable in your web browser. Older kids or kids who like competition might do better with this game than younger children. Count the Cubes places cubes on a grid in varying arrangements. As the clock starts counting, players must accurately enter the number of cubes on the grid.

In addition to counting, this game may also help practice memory or spatial reasoning because the cubes are sometimes hidden and require the ability to mentally "rotate" the shapes to reach the correct answer.

    Counting on a Cloud

    • This Flash-based in-browser game is best suited to young children, though there are multiple difficulty settings. On the easy setting, players select a "thingie", which are pictures of objects like dogs and stars, and then select a number. The game then displays that number of thingies. On the harder setting, the game displays a number of thingies and the player must count them and input the correct answer. This game has little in the way of movement or positive reinforcement, so it may not hold a child's attention for very long.

    Customized Counting Game

    • You might want to customize your own counting game. Customizing lets you change which numbers are included or what's being counted. At softschools.com, you can customize a counting game and change several options to meet your needs. The game will even give "stars" for correct answers so it can be incorporated into an already-existing rewards system for your child.

    Worksheets

    • Softschools.com also has a customizable worksheet generator with which you can design your own counting worksheets. You can select from a variety of shapes and objects to be counted, or print one of the pre-made worksheets from the site. These printable worksheets can help get kids off the computer and do math in other settings.
