Lateral Thinking Games for Kids

Lateral thinking is a term that denotes problem-solving, using a style that requires viewing a situation from a perspective that may seem insolvable. With lateral thinking problems, often the perspective or assumption of the individual can keep him from solving the puzzle. Lateral thinking games for kids involve math skills, memory enhancement, reading development and can expand the mind.
  1. Board Games

    • La-Trel is a board game designed for kids eight years old and up. This two-player lateral thinking game is played on a checker board and begins with Starter Prompt Cards. In the game, players must use skill to place defenders and Blockers against Sabre, Trident and Warrior in a challenging death match. The board game, About Time, is a lateral thinking guessing game that takes players on a time-traveling journey while competing for tokens.

    Online Interactive Games

    • Locked Office, found online at Top Spin Games, is an addicting and challenging lateral thinking game. The object of this free interactive game is to find your way out of a locked office by figuring out a series of problem-solving scenarios. Jail Escape, on the same site, is another game with the same concept but with different problems and solutions. Other entertaining and challenging games on the site include Bomb Defusal and The Big Game.

    Puzzle Competitions

    • Divide kids into teams. Give them a goal or a prize to win at the end of each lateral thinking puzzle or set a goal to win a set number of puzzles. For example, the team who wins the most puzzles out of 10 wins an extra 10 minutes of free time. Write the puzzle games on a SMART Board or dry-erase board then set the timer. Examples of lateral thinking exercises can be found at Eluzions.com and School.DiscoveryEducation.com.

    Brain Booster Games

    • Instruct teams of students to each put a coin into an empty soda bottle and cork the bottle tight. Instruct each team to remove the coin from the bottle without breaking it.

The students will have to push the cork into the bottle to be able to remove the coin. Divide the students into groups of six. Give each group a basket with six plastic eggs in them. Instruct each group that they each get one egg, but one egg must be left in the basket. The solution is that one of the team members must also take the basket with the egg still inside.
