Kindergarten Music Lessons

Children love to hear music. They especially love music when they can dance and move to the beat. Music lessons can teach far more than just how to read music or how to play a musical instrument. Kindergarten music lessons can be used to teach the alphabet, colors, and seasons, among many other things. Musical lessons are easy to tailor to just about any subject.
  1. English Music Lessons

    • Most children learn the alphabet by singing a catchy song, and you can use this same technique to teach kids about spelling, language rules and poetry. Turn a difficult vocabulary word into a song to help children remember how to spell it. Choose the tune of a familiar song, such as "Happy Birthday" or "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat," replacing the traditional words with words that match your lesson.

    Art Music Lessons

    • Music often inspires creativity in children. In your art lesson, show children creative works by abstract painters, including Pollock and Picasso. Then, in your music lesson, take your class outside and lay large pieces of paper of the ground. Turn on some fast-paced classical music, and invite the children to create their own painted masterpieces. Encourage them to draw inspiration both from the works just viewed, and the music.

After the children have painted their picture. Give them another piece of paper and put on some slow jazz, heavy metal rock or easy listening and see how the the music effects the painting.

    Physical Education Music Lessons

    • Music and physical movement go hand-in-hand. Play an up-beat, fast-tempo classical or other child-appropriate song and let children move to the rhythm and tempo. Then change the music and put on a slow song, such as a country ballad. Have the children form a circle. Put on a piece of music and ask the students to toss a ball back and forth to the beat of the music, or teach students a style of dance that matches the music. Waltz moves and square dance positions are good places to start.

    Other Music Lessons

    • There are many ways to use music to teach kindergarten students. Teach children to read musical notes and to keep a beat through the introduction of various musical instruments. Let children experiment with how each instrument works and sounds. Or, teach children a new craft project related to music. Help children create a noise maker by folding a paper plate in half, filling it with dried beans and stapling the ends closed.
