Health Lessons for Kindergarten Children

Practicing healthy habits is an important skill to teach children at an early age. Teach kindergarten students about eating well, staying clean, keeping fit and other health related topics. Teach children how to practice a healthy lifestyle at an early age and empower them to live healthy for a lifetime.
  1. Nutrition

    • Good nutrition lessons give kindergarten students the information they need to make wise food choices later in life. Just telling children to eat their vegetables and to limit sugar will not have the same impact as teaching students how the human body uses nutrients in foods to operate. Teach children about the four food groups and portion sizes. Show kindergarten students the nutrition pyramid and ask them to keep a journal of the foods they eat by drawing pictures of each meal in a notebook.

    Hygiene

    • Teach kindergarten students about staying healthy by staying clean. Show students a picture of germs as seen under a microscope and encourage them to wash their hands to remove the germs. Emphasize washing hands after using the bathroom, coming in from outside, touching pets and before eating. A lesson in food handling is also appropriate for kindergarten students who must learn the importance of washing hands before touching foods and after touching raw meats.

    Physical Activity

    • Physical activity is a key element in a healthy lifestyle. Encourage kindergarten students to run, jump, play and dance. Show the students a picture of the muscles in the human body and encourage them to stretch and use their muscles daily. Ask the children to draw a picture of their favorite physical activity and allow plenty of outdoor or gym playtime in the children's schedule.

    Other

    • Other health related lessons include teaching kindergartners about good dental health and its effect on a person's overall health. Take a field trip to a dentist's office and show children the proper way to floss and brush teeth. Another important health lesson for children is to teach them to drink plenty of water per day. Make a water bottle holder by adding a ribbon handle to a sock and embellishing.
