Halloween Lessons for Kindergarten

Halloween is a fun-filled holiday for children, as they are delighted by the costumes, treats and break from the ordinary that is associated with this holiday. If you are a kindergarten teacher, take advantage of the attraction to this holiday to teach subject matter with Halloween-themed lessons. These lessons will grab your students' attention and foster a greater understanding of the holiday and related subject areas.
  1. Math

    • Plan Halloween-themed math lessons for kindergarten students. Provide them with Halloween-shaped confetti, stickers or black-and-orange-colored beads. Encourage children to use the materials to practice making patterns. Additionally, these materials can be used to practice sorting. Provide children with the names of four or five different types of candies and ask them to identify which is their favorite. Graph the results on a piece of chart paper and read the chart with children to determine which type of candy the class likes the most and which they like the least.

    English-Language Arts

    • Provide students with Halloween-themed English-language arts lessons to develop their reading and writing skills. Print the names of different Halloween-related words on a piece of chart paper; bat, witch and ghost, for example. Ask students if they can think of words that rhyme with the given words to develop phonemic awareness. Print out pictures of Halloween-related items and, on a piece of paper, write individual letters. Have children match the pictures to the letter that they begin with. Read aloud Halloween-themed stories and have students arrange images from the stories in sequential order to promote reading comprehension.

    Science

    • Review the parts of a skeleton for a Halloween-related science activity. Print out images of skeletons and cut them apart. Discuss the names of specific body parts and show them pictures of the bones of these body parts. Have them assemble the bones of the skeleton in the correct order. Explore the senses with pumpkins. Cut open pumpkins and allow children to empty them out and observe the innards with magnifying glasses. Bake some of the seeds and allow children to taste them. Ask students to describe what they see, feel, smell and taste.

    Arts and Crafts

    • Kindergartners gain valuable lessons from arts and crafts activities, including artistic exploration, learning how to follow directions and language development. At Halloween, have children create crafts that pertain to the holiday. Provide them with white tissues and yarn. Have them wad tissues into a ball, cover the ball with another tissue and tie a piece of yarn around it to create a ghost. Offer students small pumpkins and paint and encourage them to use the paint to decorate their pumpkins.
