Create learning stations in your kindergarten classroom. A learning station is a place within the classroom that offers challenging activities for gifted students in a particular academic area. For instance, while average-learners are completing a coloring assignment, a gifted kindergartner might use a learning station to perform a higher-level activity, such as putting together a puzzle, doing an art project or learning a more advanced lesson.
Design your learning stations based on the talents that are displayed and prepare appropriate activities. For example, if your gifted kindergartners are proficient in math, but are average readers, structure your learning stations around mathematics activities. You can give the gifted kindergartners math games to play with one another or teach them more complex math functions.
Create a team or group setup within the classroom. Rather than giving your gifted kindergartners individual desks, which can become isolating, arrange the classroom into small clusters of tables and chairs. This setup allows you to assign your gifted students challenging activities to work on collectively. Not only will the activity enhance their knowledge, but the idea of working together in a team format will present them with certain barriers to overcome, too.
Give your gifted learners, their stations and table clusters space. As a teacher you can give your gifted kindergartners more independence to work on their assignments or projects without their needing to be directly under your nose. Perhaps dedicate a quiet corner in the room for your gifted learners to work together or independently, keeping the rest of the class towards the front of the room.
Have the appropriate tools and resources available for gifted kindergartners to use. For instance, if you are using blocks to teach students how to count to 20, you might need higher-numbered blocks to teach your gifted learners. If you only provide your gifted students with the same tools and resources that you use with average learners, you are not enhancing the gifted-learning experience.
