Pick the spot where you plan to place the computers. Choose a spot that is easily viewable from throughout the classroom. For easier supervision, avoid choosing a place where the computers cannot be seen just by moving to a certain spot in the classroom. Determine how many computers you plan to include in your class or how many computers are available to you.
Note where the outlets are because you want to avoid leaving any loose wires. One way is to set up your computers in a row and placed against a wall so you can avoid loose wires. Place the technology center next to the literacy center if included in your classroom. This way you can minimize the effects of students bringing learning toys into this area. Ensure that the computers are height appropriate for your students.
Wrap the wires with a cord holder to keep them organized and out of the way. Even if the wires are by the wall wrap them to avoid potential problems. Another layout idea is setting up the computers in clusters around a standing column that has designated outlets. This layout works better for a smaller classroom setup, the only drawback being that fewer computers are available as opposed to if they were in rows.
Give your new center its space in the classroom. By adding computers, that means you plan to incorporate technology into your instruction. Make sure students know that your computer center is just for computer time and that all other items should remain out of the area. Add a sign on top of your new center. It could say something like, "Technology Center" or "Computer Center."
