Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Kindergarten Lessons

If you use "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as the basis for lesson plans for kindergarten, you will be able to cover a variety of topics while keeping the lessons seasonally appropriate at Christmastime. Start by reading the story of Rudolph to the children and move onto different kindergarten lessons from there.
  1. Music

    • Teaching a song to children in kindergarten requires them to have a number of skills. They have to memorize both the words and the melody, try to sing in key and sing in time with other children. Have the children find the beat of the song by clapping their hands or playing instruments along with singing. Have the children talk about the different feelings expressed during the song, such as sadness when Rudolph was excluded, or happiness at the end of the song.

    Relationships

    • Discuss the lyrics from the song with the children. Ask the children how they would feel if they were Rudolph, excluded from the games. Discuss how they should avoid judging other people. Talk about how everyone is different in their own way and how people can learn from differences. Have the children decide how they would change the story to make everyone act nicer to Rudolph.

    Art

    • Let the children make a Rudolph picture using their handprint. Cut out the shape of their hand from brown construction paper. They can color in the tips of the fingers in a darker brown to create hooves. Have them glue on a googly eye and a small red pom-pom on the thumb for Rudolph's face and then glue small brown pipe cleaners on the back of the thumb to create antlers.

    Letters

    • Teach the children a letter, such as "R" for Rudolph or reindeer. The children can trace the letter and then try writing it themselves, or they can trace the entire words if they can do so. Have the children identify all of the "Rs" in "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."
