Kindergarten Typing Lessons

Typing is a key skill necessary for success in school and in the workforce. Children in elementary school are starting to learn typing skills and e-learning skills as young as kindergarten. There are typing skills options for teachers to make use of, but there are also some considerations to make while teaching typing skills to kindergarten-age children.
  1. Benefits of Typing Young

    • Children who learn typing skills from a young age have a competitive edge over children who do not. Computers are used throughout school years, in many careers and for personal needs. Having a working knowledge of using a computer from the kindergarten level gets children ready for the use of computers on school assignments and later job assignments.

    Learning Lessons

    • Lessons for typing at the kindergarten level include subjects like key recognition and the proper ways to use the keyboard. For example, students learn the location of letters on the keyboard, how to sit when typing, how to place hands while typing and how to type from where the fingers are placed.

    Typing Games

    • Kindergarteners need games to help keep the typing interesting. Games available online are designed specifically for kindergarten-age children who are just learning to type. The games reiterate lessons learned previously and allow the students to enjoy an interactive activity. Kindergarteners play the games to improve typing speed, accuracy and basic skills, depending on the child's typing level.

    Motivation

    • While computers are interesting to young children, getting them motivated in typing lessons, even with games, is sometimes a challenge. To keep up a kindergartener's motivation to learn typing, offer a wide range of different games. From there, teachers can give treats and rewards, such as a reward for the fastest typist or a reward for the class when they behave appropriately for a specific number of days. Rewards at the kindergarten level might include items like ribbons, candies or similar small objects.
