Kindergarten Hands-On Math Lessons

Hands-on math activities help students at the kindergarten level to more fully grasp math concepts. There are a variety of lessons for kindergarten children addressing math fundamentals such as shapes, measuring instruments, numbers, addition and subtraction.
  1. Money Counting

    • For this assignment, give each kindergarten student a small pile of pennies. Turn part of the classroom into a little store, setting up objects that the children can pretend to buy with their pennies. Put a price tag on each item, and have the children practice counting their pennies for different items. Encourage the children to combine pennies with each other -- to teach them addition -- to purchase the more expensive items.

    Shapes

    • Bring bright, colorful paper into the classroom, as well as crayons, and trace on the pieces of paper a variety of shapes: octagons, squares, circles and rectangles, for example. Then, ask the children -- using kid-friendly scissors -- to cut out the shapes the you have traced. After the shapes are cut out, help the children label the shapes, and walk them through all of the different shapes.

    Measuring Instruments

    • Bring to class a variety of measuring instruments, including a ruler, clock, scale, thermometer and measuring cups and spoons. Allow the kids to touch and hold the devices for a few minutes, then one by one, pick up a device and explain it' name and function.

    Sand Numbers

    • Bring small bowls -- plastic or paper bowls will do -- and fill each with a low layer of sand. Give a bowl filled with sand to each kindergartner. Then, on a blackboard, write a number or several numbers. Ask the children, using their fingers, to trace the numbers they see in sand and say them out loud. If any of the numbers weren't traced properly, shake the bowl gently and ask the child to try again.
