Ask the children to collect their change over a period of two weeks. Then, at the end of the period, they can walk around the city park. Ask a local official, such as the mayor of your town, to the event and give him the money the children have collected. The money could go towards equipment for the park or to plant trees. Treat the children to snacks after their walk.
The use of recycled materials is one way to conserve the Earth’s resources. Children can gain an appreciation for recycled materials by learning to make things out of them. Toilet paper rolls, string and empty bottles are among the recycled materials that children can easily come by. Help children make things, such as musical instruments, with recycled material and they will have fun as they learn.
Sorting materials for recycling. Take the children to a recycling center. Tell them about how different materials, such as paper and glass bottles, go into different recycling piles. They can help sort the materials into different piles. You can also take the children on a walk to collect trash. They can sort the trash for recycling.
The milk containers that children drink from can serve as an educational aid for this lesson. When they are done with the milk, instead of throwing the cartons away ask the children to plant a seed in them. They can decorate the cartons to make them look brighter. The children can take care of the seeds and watch as they grow. When the plants become big enough, they can take them home and transplant them.
