Ideas for Bulletin Boards for Kindergarten Age Level

Traditionally used as a surface intended to post public information, bulletin boards provide an important function in the classroom, adding a decorative, educational, and possibly interactive component. Those found in schools are most often cork boards, but there are also felt boards, rubber boars, tack boards and magnetic boards. The kindergarten age group is made up of three- to five-year-olds, so displays should be colorful, playful and uncluttered to capture children's attention and imagination.
  1. Student Work

    • Being such a young age group, most student work will probably be artwork consisting of drawing, paintings and other work that can be pinned up. Rather than pinning up pages in columns and rows, if possible, group work so that it overlaps similar to a collage. This creates a visually stunning art piece on its own. To make displays more interesting, you can add a border that reflects the theme of the projects being displayed.

    Seasonal Themes

    • Seasonal themes often include the holidays or activities that occur during that time. Fall or autumn is associated with going back to school and the Thanksgiving and Halloween holidays, all of which make great bulletin board themes. Be sure to have a bold title and label common items related to your theme to help children recognize the words. Winter themes can include Christmas, New Year's, snow and winter sports. Spring conjures up images of butterflies, flowers and Easter. Since most of summer is spent on holiday, places the kids plan on vacationing and items like picnic baskets and beach balls will make them look forward to break.

    Story Board

    • Make a book come to life by recreating it on the bulletin board. You can take a simple book, such as "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" By Eric Carle, and turn it into an interactive lesson. Prepare simple cutouts of a brown bear and all the other animals in the book, since that is what is usually seen, and while reading, ask kids to place the new characters on the board as they are introduced. This sort of activity is perfect for magnetic or felt boards, so kids don't hurt themselves when pinning up the cutouts.

    Educational

    • Young minds are like sponges; they are quickly able to pick information and material that is around them. Having an educational-themed bulletin board is a great way to start the year because it can serve as a basic introduction. In addition, there likely isn't any student work to adorn it with yet. An alphabet board accompanied by an object or animal beginning with the same letter looks wonderful in any kindergarten classroom. Numbers, colors, shapes and the weather are other ideas that are suitable for this age level.
