Ideas for Tacky the Penguin Bulletin Boards

Helen Lester writes about a lovable, albeit odd, little penguin in her book "Tacky the Penguin." Many parents, teachers and school psychologists have enlisted the help of this endearing storybook to help reach students who are feeling odd, left out or different in general. Marci A. Olsen of Brigham Young University writes that the bibliotherapeutic value of "Tacky the Penguin" reaches students dealing with difficult issues such as tolerance and differences in others. Put together an attractive bulletin board that captures the valuable theme of acceptance in this book.
  1. Be Different. Be Exciting.

    • A little construction paper and creativity will get the message across.

Line a bulletin board with light blue across the top half and white across the bottom. Staple the title across the top of the board "Be Different. Be Exciting." Using construction paper, make a representation of Tacky for the center of the board. Cut a large, black triangle from construction paper. Staple this with the tip pointing downward on the board. Staple a small, orange triangle, tip down, for a beak. Glue two, large wiggly eyes above the beak. A large white oval should be stapled on his stomach. Cut a white, short-sleeved shirt of paper. Cover the shirt in bold, yellow flowers using paper or markers. Add a large, purple bow tie under his chin. Represent the six sleek, well-groomed penguin friends on either side of Tacky. Follow the same steps to create these penguins, omitting the unique clothing. Rather than wiggly eyes, make their eyes of white, paper circles with a black dot. These six penguins should be identical.

    Let's Be Tacky

    • Each student makes her own unique penguin.

On a yellow background, staple the black words "Let's Be Tacky" across the top of the bulletin board. Staple an enlarged, color photocopied image of Tacky on the board. Write his name across his stomach. Invite a class or group of students to use construction paper to design and make their own unique penguin. Invite students to write their name on their penguin. Discuss how all people are different and that makes the world an exciting place to live.

    Three Cheers for YOU

    • Celebrate the uniqueness in each student.

On an orange background, staple the words "Three Cheers for YOU!" across the top of a bulletin board. Use construction paper to make a representation of Tacky with his signature shirt and bow tie. Point Tacky's toes downward and reach one wing up in the air. Staple Tacky a bit crooked in the center of the board. In black marker, draw three curved lines by each foot indicating Tacky jumping in the air. In his upheld wing, place a team spirit flag. Staple cheerleading items around the sides of Tacky, such as small pom poms, cones for yelling, small balloons, colorful string streamers and cut-out squares of confetti.

    Make a Splash

    • Tacky the Penguin always makes a splash.

Line a bulletin board with dark blue paper across the top half and light blue paper across the bottom. Staple the words "Make a Splash" across the top of the board in orange letters. Use construction paper to make a representation of Tacky's profile. Reach his wings toward his feet. Place a wildly colored swim cap on his head. As if he were doing a cannonball, place him just above the water line. Add tear-drop shapes of white splashing up from the water line. On either side of Tacky, place three identical penguins' top half in the water. Surround their middle with an orange oval representing an inner-tube. Discuss with students how Tacky always pleasantly surprises readers with his creativity and lack of inhibitions.
