Kindergarten Art Activities for Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Dr. Seuss is a beloved American icon. His books, such as "The Cat in the Hat" and "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish," have made their way into the hearts and homes of Americans. Some people, particularly child educators such as kindergarten teachers, choose to honor Dr. Seuss' memory by celebrating his birthday on March 2 every year. Seuss was born on that day in 1904. Consider some art activities that a kindergarten class can do to celebrate the beloved author's day.
  1. Birthday Party Banner

    • A birthday party is a festive way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' special day. Have children help create a colorful happy birthday banner for the party. Use bright colors such as those featured in the books. Children can also decorate party hats for the party. Hang some streamers and balloons on the side of the banner to create a festive look. Serve a cake that features the characters from "The Cat in the Hat" or "Green Eggs and Ham" on the top of the cake. Read several Seuss books and sing "Happy Birthday" at the celebration.

    Performance Backdrops

    • Have the kindergarten class decide on one or two Seuss books to feature in a live performance. Use art materials such as pens, markers and paint to create backgrounds and props for the performance. Use the book illustration as a reference when creating the pictures. Assign lines to various students from the Dr. Seuss books. Invite friends, family, students and school staff to view the live performance.

    Bulletin Board

    • Create a bulletin board that features a the words "Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss" across a picture of Dr. Seuss and some of the covers to his well-known works. Have each student draw a picture of his favorite Dr. Seuss character. Add the pictures to the bulletin board along with the student's name. Invite parents to the classroom to view the bulletin board and listen to a few Dr. Seuss books.

Other Kindergarten Art Activities for Dr. Seuss' Birthday

    • Have each kindergarten student bring a copy of picture of themselves into class. Help students cut their face out of the picture. Have the students draw a picture of the "Cat" from the book "The Cat in the Hat." Glue the child's face next to the Cat and have the students draw a body for themselves, along with a party hat on top of their heads. Hang the pictures up on the wall to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Another way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday is have kindergarten students honor his memory by making-up their own character or animal like the author and illustrator did. Have the students study the illustrations of Dr. Seuss' books and ask them to create their own character. Then ask them to name the character they have created.
