Penguin Activities for Kindergarten

In kindergarten, when children are learning about animals, they are often introduced to penguins. At the kindergarten lesson, children are not yet ready for activities such as labeling, but there are activities that kindergarten classes can use to learn about penguins.
  1. Coloring Activities

    • Provide students with penguin coloring activities. Coloring activities vary depending on the children, but options include simple coloring pictures of penguins in their arctic environment or pictures of penguins which label the parts of the animal for early child biology. Teaching about the penguin life cycle is possible by using a series of coloring pages. For example, when teaching about emperor penguins, the children can color a picture of the penguins holding an egg on their feet followed by a second of the chicks on their feet. Follow up with the important stages of penguin growth and end with penguins choosing mates. The pictures will vary depending on the type of penguin and the habits of the type.

    Penguin Song

    • Singing a song is one way that kindergarten teachers help students learn about penguins. Ask the students to help make up a song telling penguin facts or make one up personally and then teach the students about the penguins through song. The song not only makes the information memorable, but interests young children who are around five years old.

    Story Time

    • There are several children's books on penguins or about penguins which teachers can use for penguin lessons. For example, teachers might read "Tacky the Penguin" by Helen Lester or "Without You" by Sarah Weeks. Read the books during a story time in class and show the pictures to the students. The teacher can also ask questions about the book afterward to see what information the class learned.

    Egg Walk

    • For an activity to get children moving, have them walk with an egg on their feet. Explain how the emperor penguins carry eggs on their feet to protect the egg and baby penguin while providing heat. Children should take off their shoes, balance an egg and then try walking around. To minimize messes, use hardboiled eggs.
