Membership in the Hillsborough branch of the YMCA offers all the traditional benefits—a gym, swimming pool, and numerous fitness classes for kids and adults. However, what many people may not realize is that the YMCA also offers classes in the arts and humanities for kids, teens and adults. Membership is required, and you need to sign up for these on a first come, first serve basis (Note that the price of these classes is significantly less than privately-owned camps).
Choices include:
Cartooning: Students will learn to create their own characters, the basics of comic strip format, lettering, and how to tell a story, not to mention the ability to practice drawing.
Drawing: This class works for the beginning and advanced artist. The class will address contour drawing, perspective, 3D drawing, and life drawing.
Painting: Students will learn how to mix colors and control perspective, as well as proper brush care.

For children interested in cartoons and comic books, Smudges and Strokes holds a one-week Cartoon Art Camp for kids 8 and up. Students will learn storytelling skills and create heroes and villains. After this, the focus will be on drawing people, frames, and word bubbles, leading to the final goal--creating a complete comic strip.
