How to Check an APA in Text Citing of a Paragraph

APA format citations are generally used in the scientific community, though this format is often taught and in high schools and colleges. Having a proper in-text citation helps the reader to understand from which source the information originated. A proper citation in the text should lead the reader to a full reference at the end of the work or in the footnotes of the writing. This full citation will help the reader to find more materials related to the topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the paragraph and search for material that is paraphrased or quoted. If the author used a quotation or a paraphrase, the paragraph will need a citation.

    • 2

Look for a parenthetical citation at the end of the paragraph. The citation should include the author if not previously introduced, the year of publication, and if applicable the page number.

    • 3

Check the parenthetical citation against the full citation in the "works cited" page or footnotes. The citation should easily lead you to the source indicated. If there is some confusion, the in-text citation is not clear enough.

    • 4

Locate the quote or paraphrased material in the source. If the citation was placed properly, the source information should contain the same ideas or exact quote found in the writing.
