How to Decorate a Bookshelf for a School Auction

A school auction is an excellent way to bring in a few extra dollars, but it works only if you have interesting and unusual items to sell. The most important aspect of running a successful auction is creating a high profit margin, which you can accomplish by buying simple items and having students spruce them up. This makes them more valuable to parents, meaning more money in the school’s coffers. A school spirit bookshelf is one project that involves relatively few supplies but can fetch a healthy price at auction.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather a collection of water-soluble paints. You can focus on your school’s colors or try something a little more psychedelic.

    • 2

Pick up an old bookshelf at a thrift store or retail shop. It does not need to be pretty, but it should be in good condition with minimal aesthetic damage.

    • 3

Sand the bookshelf to prime the surface for new paint and remove any scratches or splinters.

    • 4

Coat the bookshelf with white primer so your students will have a blank canvas on which to work.

    • 5

Bring the bookshelf to your classroom and place it on a tarp or painting sheets.

    • 6

Give each of your students an apron to protect their clothes. Distribute paintbrushes and set up your paints on a table near the bookshelf, over the tarp.

    • 7

Ask each student to add a personal decoration to the shelf and to sign that contribution when it's completed.

    • 8

Place the bookshelf in the school auction and wait to see how much money it makes.
