How to Decorate for a Homecoming Parade

A homecoming is a time honored tradition in schools across the U.S. when students are welcomed back "home." The main focus of a homecoming is a big athletic event, but there is typically much hoopla surrounding the event to get faculty, current and past students geared up for the game and to show school spirit. A parade is often held during a homecoming, which adds to the excitement of the event. Decorating the school and the location where the parade will be held can help to heighten the excitement of the festivities.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a theme for the homecoming parade. These parades are often based on a theme and that theme is used as a basis for the floats that will be shown in the parade. For example, a blast-from-the-past, in which different decades in history are honored may be a theme idea.

    • 2

Decorate the school with elements that are associated with the theme. In the given example, tie-dyed banners, pictures of icons from different decades and images of classic cars may be displayed around the halls and in common areas of the school. Decorating the school will help to get students and faculty revved up for the homecoming parade and game.

    • 3

Decorate the area where the parade will be held. Inflate balloons that represent school colors and tie them around telephone poles and street signs. Create spirited signs on poster board that cheer on the school's team and display them on telephone poles or place them on wooden dowels and insert them into the ground along the parade route.

    • 4

Encourage parade-goers to dress up in spirited attire for the event. Prompt participants to wear face paint that represents school colors. Create t-shirts that showcase the school mascot and the name of the school and distribute them for people to wear. Distribute beads in school colors for those marching in and those observing the parade to wear.
