How to Run for a School Board in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania School Board Association has determined specific rules for citizens who wish to run for a school board position, and these rules are blanket rules for the whole state of Pennsylvania. From Sayre to Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, all school districts choose, keep and re-elect school board officials in the same manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Report to the county office your age, years residing in the school district and years residing in Pennsylvania. A potential candidate will not be approved if he has been in the district for less than a year.

    • 2

Obtain a petition from the county or municipal offices and gather 10 signatures supporting your candidacy. School board positions are political so the signatures need to be from members of the same political party as the candidate.

    • 3

File a statement of financial interest if your candidate position is for the office of school director. Every candidate must file an expense report with the county office where their candidacy lies.

    • 4

Wait for the candidacy paperwork to be approved by the school board, then start campaigning. Tell friends, neighbors and other parents within the school district of your new endeavor and begin getting your name into people's heads.
