How to Plan for Nursing School

You need to plan your nursing school experience once you discover your passion for working with people as a nurse. Nursing degrees are obtained after receiving a high school diploma; you can obtain a nursing degree from a four-year university, two-year college or graduate school. Upon completion of a program, nurses-in-training take a state licensing exam to become a registered nurse (RN). Admission requirements vary depending on the program, but creating a plan is the best way to understand the steps you need to follow to reach your goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine which type of nursing school program is best for you. If you are a recent high school graduate or have obtained your GED, consider an associate's program or a four-year college degree. If you already have a degree in nursing, plan to look into graduate school nursing programs.

    • 2

Take preparatory classes during high school such as chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics. If you have already graduated, you will need to find out if any prerequisite classes are required before being admitted to a nursing program. Sign up for the classes or determine a schedule for taking them.

    • 3

Contact nursing schools in the area where you wish to attend nursing school. Call the admissions department to find out what the application process consists of. If possible, visit the schools and talk to students and faculty. This will help you determine the best fit for you in your planning process.

    • 4

Speak with a financial aid representative to help plan how you will pay for nursing school. Fill out appropriate financial aid forms.

    • 5

Write down information regarding when you plan to apply, how many years you would like to be in school and how you are planning to pay for school. Having this information in one place will help you remember important application deadlines and other pertinent information.
