How to Plan a Medieval Feast for Middle School

Middle school students often celebrate the end of a study of medieval times with a traditional medieval feast. The real feasts lasted hours and sometimes days. They incorporated music, entertainment and many different food courses, sometimes as many as 30. Modern-day school versions may include period costumes, jugglers and jesters, music and, of course, food reminiscent of dishes prepared in medieval times. Students can decorate, make costumes and prepare music; parents can assist with food purchases and preparation. Invite families and the school staff and enjoy a trip through the Middle Ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the number of people you will have at the feast and secure a venue to accommodate them -- this may be the school gym or cafeteria. Send invitations to special guests two to three weeks in advance of the feast date.

    • 2

Develop a menu for the feast. Include items that resemble those served in medieval times: breads; wild nuts, berries and fruits; turkey or chicken legs; fruit-filled pies and savory tarts; and grape juice or sparkling cider to drink. Make a shopping list and enlist some parents to assist with purchasing and preparing the food the day before the feast.

    • 3

Make medieval-looking decorations for the room in which the feast will be held. Paint and hang large posters or cardboard crests with fleur-de-lis, lions, and other regal symbols to transform your gym into a castle. Add statues of knights, brocade and velvet curtains or cushions, and thick candles and light sconces to create a medieval atmosphere.

    • 4

Assign students specific tasks to prepare for the feast and for the actual day of the event. Assign one group to select music appropriate for both background music during the feast and performance during the breaks. Another group can learn simple juggling and practice performing as court jesters. Have another group prepare the table with plants, candles and place settings the day before the feast. Develop a program for the event and have students use the information to create a medieval-looking scroll for each guest. If period costumes are desired, students can make or rent these.
