Create colorful posters to inform students about the book club and invite them to join. Include images of books titles that appeal to this age group and information that catches their attention, such as "Read and Socialize with Your Peers" or "Share Your Thoughts and Ideas at Book Club." Include other pertinent information, such as the meeting time, the frequency of meeting and the location.
Write down the names of students who are interested in joining the club. Decide on a date for the first book club meeting.
Prepare a list of titles for students to choose from. Include a synopsis of each book, and read the synopsis to the students. Allow students to vote for the title that they would like to read based on the synopsis. Select the title that acquired the majority of votes.
Inform students how much they should read before the next meeting; chapters one through five, for example. Encourage students to generate a list of questions or discussions that pertain to the book, which they should bring with them to the next meeting.
Provide children with copies of the book, have them purchase the book or borrow it from their library.
Ask students to bring a snack to share with the group at each meeting to create a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere.
Encourage children to ask their questions, share their thoughts and discuss what happened in the text at the next meeting. Prompt them to try to relate the book to their personal experiences or to predict what they think will happen.
Assign another section of the text to read before the next meeting. Continue on with the same process until the text is completed. Move forward, selecting new books for the duration of the school year.
