Measurable Goals for Middle School Students

Middle school is a time of physical and emotional growth for students. It can also be a time of turmoil as young people move into the more expansive environment of middle school. Instructing students on how to set measurable goals can help them successfully navigate the highs and lows of middle school.
  1. Goal Setting Basics

    • Setting goals can help students focus and achieve, but these goals need to be measurable. Setting a goal of doing better in school is admirable, but too vague. For a goal to be successful, it needs to be concrete with specific actions that are achievable. The goal of studying for 15 extra minutes every day is not only specific and measurable, but also likely to lead to better grades. Middle school students need the guidance of parents and teachers to help them set and achieve their goals.

    Academic Goals

    • Academic goals for middle school students should be directed by the students themselves and stated in positive ways. For a goal to be both measurable and successful, students need to have a vested interest in achieving that goal. A good activity at the start of each semester or quarter is to have students set one specific goal, write the goal down and post it on a bulletin board. This allows the students to take part in the goal setting, as well as be held accountable. Examples of measurable academic goals for middles students include improving math quiz scores or taking notes while reading.

    Personal Goals

    • Achieving measurable goals can increase both self-confidence and motivation in middle school students. Goal setting can be a powerful tool for empowering students to be their best and make a difference in the world around them. Teachers and students can brainstorm about important issues, both personal and global, and choose some areas students would like to try to have a positive impact. Measurable personal goals could include starting a garden on school grounds, creating an anti-bullying campaign or taking steps to welcome new students.

    Long-Term Goals

    • Middle school is not too early for students to start thinking about college and other long-term goals. Helping students to look ahead and consider what is required for college success allows them to set meaningful goals. According to a New York Times article in 2010, some New Jersey middle schools implemented a program that helps students to develop personalized learning plans. Students are encouraged to consider what specific and measurable steps they need to take right now to put them on the path to college.
