Interactive Games for Middle School Students

Middle school students require a lot of activity in the classroom to stay engaged and focused on the educational material. Playing games provides a way to keep students active and focused in a way that does not feel as much like schoolwork. Students will forget they are learning as they play some of these interactive games.
  1. Math Games

    • For students who like to compete against one another, Arcademic Skill Builders (arcademicskillbuilders.com) offers multi-players games where teams of four can race each other while solving problems related to integers and fractions, which are two areas of math with which students frequently struggle. Science Academy (scienceacademy.com/BI) offers an online basketball game that students can play using a variety of math topics, including the order of operations, bar graphs, exponents, perimeter and verbal reasoning.

    Science Games

    • Vocabulary is an important component of a middle school science class. Teachers can create online crossword puzzles, word searches and games of hangman. Jefferson Lab (education.jlab.org) offers Science Vocabulary Hangman where students can choose sets of vocabulary words to play the game. Teachers can add their own sets of vocabulary words to the game as well. Engaging Science (engagingscience.org) offers games for students to play related to scientific topics such as the phases of the moon and layers of the Earth.

    Language Arts Games

    • The majority of interactive language arts games found online focus on grammar and helping students recognize the parts of speech. While this is initially an elementary topic, it needs to be reinforced in middle school. Funbrain (funbrain.com) offers Grammar Gorillas, which requires students to identify the parts of speech in a sentence, and online MadLibs, where students fill in the parts of speech to complete a silly story. To help students become better spellers, Big IQ Kids (bigiqkids.com) offers an online spelling bee. Teachers can create a class game where students can compete against one another to see who is the best speller in the class.

    Social Studies Games

    • In middle school social studies, students often cover a wealth of material from ancient civilizations to current affairs and state history. Since social studies is a fact-based subject, teachers can create PowerPoint versions of popular trivia games such as "Jeopardy" or "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" for their specific subject matter. Crossword puzzles and word searches can also help students remember key terms and names of famous people in history.
