Fun Ways to Teach Homophones in Middle School

Homophones are words that feature the same sound but different meanings. Homophones are sometimes spelled the same, though this is not always the case. Missing homophones often result in funny sentences, so do not be afraid to interject some humor in your homophone grammar lessons. Plan lessons that get your students out of their seats and interacting with their peers to keep them engaged.
  1. Homophone Matching Game

    • Create a homophone matching game for your students to play, recommends the website K12 Reader. Make a list of homophones, such as son and sun, meet and meat or rose and rose. Next, draw or attach a picture of each homophone on a blank index card; for example, draw a picture of two people meeting on one card and a piece of meat on the other. Students must find matching homophone pictures to create a match.

    Comic Strip

    • Teach students about homophones with an art activity. Ask students to create a comic strip using homophones, recommends the website Read Write Think. Give each student a long strip of white paper. Show students how to draw large squares across the paper, leaving room at the top for their name and the title of the comic. Assign each student a homophone or set of homophones that he must use in his comic. Give students markers or crayons and encourage them to draw their comic. When students have completed their project, invite them to share their comic with the class.

    Homophone Presentations

    • Let your students take on the role of teacher with homophone presentations. Place students in groups of three or four and assign each group a homophone set. Encourage students to find engaging methods for presenting their homophones to the class. Suggest humorous skits, colorful posters or whole-class games with prizes as possible presentation formats. Give students several days to complete their presentation and provide them with access to art supplies and computers to complete the task.

    Homophone Context Clues

    • Help students learn how to use context clues to determine the correct homophone being used in a sentence. Make a list of sentences that feature at least one homophone. Give each student several squares of scrap paper or index cards. Read a sentence out loud and ask students to identify and spell the homophone they think was used in the sentence. Ask students to give a definition of the word for homophones with identical spellings.
