How to Make Middle School Spanish Fun

Learning a new language should be a pleasant experience. Children love to learn, and they can understand and retain information from a very early age. Students who learn a new language at a younger age are more likely to remember it than adults who study a foreign language. In middle school, students are often bored, unchallenged or uninterested. Make Spanish lessons fun by integrating interactive group activities. Students are more likely to remember and use a foreign language if the lesson is interesting and entertaining.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a theme for each lesson. Group words into a particular subject to aid memorization. For example, use the theme "summer fun" and teach vocabulary like sun, beach, hot and coconut.

    • 2

Divide the class into groups or teams and have your students practice speaking Spanish. Have each student ask her partner a question and have the partner respond appropriately.

    • 3

Use worksheets with crossword puzzles, word searches or fill-in-the-blank items. Students typically have more fun when they are involved in an activity rather than just a lecture. Divide groups into teams to see who can complete the worksheet first.

    • 4

Encourage writing in Spanish as well as speaking. Hold up flashcards with Spanish vocabulary words written on them. Ask students to pronounce the word and define it in English. Give your students a list of subjects and ask them to write a sentence based on each subject.

    • 5

Integrate other subjects into a Spanish lesson. For example, use art or music as an interactive project that applies to your lesson. During the Halloween season, for instance, talk about the Day of the Dead and make art related to the holiday.

    • 6

Throw a festival or party. Lay out food items and each student must say the correct word for the food before they can eat it. Play Spanish music in the background or teach a popular tune like "De Colores." For a Christmas party, assign Spanish-speaking countries to each student, who will give a short presentation on how that country celebrates Christmas.
