How to Not Be Nervous for School

School can sometimes be nerve-wracking whether you're entering a new school or grade or you just have something big coming up that has you worried. Take relief in knowing you're not alone; everyone experiences it at least once. Certain tips can help you avoid being nervous for school so you can walk in the building with confidence and your head held high.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask advice from those who have been through a similar situation. If you're transferring to a new school or grade, ask for tips from those who already go, or went, to that school or who were already in that grade. They'll be able to provide the best insight about what to do, where to go and what to avoid. If you're nervous about a particular situation, such as giving an oral presentation, ask for pointers from the teacher and those who have already given the speeches. However, your best bet is to know the material, practice often and, while giving the speech, scan the room right above the heads of the audience so it appears as though you're looking them in the eyes.

Take plenty of notes. Regardless of the situation, taking notes can help you figure out a plan for the situation you're nervous about, which can help you feel much more at ease about it. For example, when entering a new school, write notes about everything from how to get to the restrooms to which classes are the best to take. You'll usually learn this information from teachers, from previous students or at new student orientation. Carry the small notebook with you at all times should you need it.

    • 3

Go to sleep earlier than normal. Sometimes the best way to ease your nerves is to sleep, and if you're feeling exceptionally nervous, chances are you won't fall asleep right away. When you go to bed earlier than normal, you give yourself that extra time to fall asleep.

Meditate as often as possible leading up to school. Repeat a mantra to yourself for as long as it takes to calm your nerves. Close your eyes, take deep breaths and concentrate on increasing your confidence level. Even while at school, head to the restroom and take a minute or two before you leave the stall to take deep breaths and think positive thoughts without anyone interrupting you.

    • 5

Plan everything out at least a day before you walk into the school. Write a list and check it off as you complete each task. Getting everything done early will help you feel more at ease by being well-prepared and confident that you didn't forget anything. When your list is complete, triple-check it, then keep telling yourself that you have everything you need and you're ready.

Focus on the positive when you're nervous. One of the things that causes such nervous feelings is thinking of every bad thing that could happen, which certainly isn't very calming. Every time you start to think of a negative aspect, quickly change it to positive. For example, if you're going to a new school, instead of thinking about how you don't know anyone, quickly change your mindset and tell yourself that it's a chance for you to meet a lot of new people and start fresh.
