How to Calculate a GPA for a Transfer

Most students, no matter which grade they are in, have a grade point average. The GPA is based on students' performance in school. Teachers grade students' work and input those grades into their grading systems, providing a cumulative score for each student. Those grades then are reflected on report cards and progress reports. Once students have their grades in each class they can average them to calculate their GPA. Typically, a 4.0 GPA indicates a student with straight A's and is the best that can be achieved.

Instructions

    • 1

      Get your grades. For GPA calculation purposes, each letter grade is assigned a number. The numbers are as follows:

      A = 4 points

      B = 3 points

      C = 2 points

      D = 1 point

      F = 0 points

    • 2

      Write down the number of points you have for each grade, and add them. For example, if you took eight classes, and you have A's in four classes (16 points), B's in three classes (9 points) and a C in one class (2 points), you have a total of 27 points.

    • 3

      Divide the total number of points by the number of classes you took. In this example, you would divide 27 by eight. Your GPA would be 3.38.
