How to Calculate GPA Curve for Honors Courses

Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are available to students that excel academically. The coursework is more difficult than that of the regular equivalent course in addition to containing substantially more work. Because of the difficulty level of the work in honors and AP classes an extra point is given to the numerical value of each letter grade when calculating grade point averages (GPA).

Instructions

    • 1

      Obtain your grades from all of your classes. Provide each grade its numerical value.

      Regular Classes

      A = 4 points

      B = 3 points

      C = 2 points

      D = 1 point

      F = 0 points

      Honors/AP Classes

      A = 5 points

      B = 4 points

      C = 3 points

      D = 2 points

      F = 0 points

    • 2

      Add the total points for each of your classes. Add your regular class scores using the standard GPA score chart and your honors class grades by adding an additional point to each letter grade.

    • 3

      Divide the number of points by the total number of classes you are taking. For example, if you have five classes with all "B"s and three of your classes are honors you have 18 points. Divide 18 by five to reach a GPA of 3.6.
