How to Calculate GPA Using Weights & Grade

A cumulative grade point average (GPA) is essential to many soon-to-be high school graduates and to those already in college. A GPA is used for everything from awarding scholarships to placing people on the honor roll, so calculating a GPA is important. You can calculate a GPA by using the actual letter grade, the points for that grade and the numerical "weight" it is given. This means an 'A' is worth four points, a 'B' three points and so on. Grade points are given based on the grade, meaning an 'A'-plus is worth more than an 'A'-minus. Even taking into consideration the number of required steps, calculating a GPA is fairly easy.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the grade card on the table. Place a separate piece of paper and the grade point chart for the school next to it.

    • 2

Look for the grade points for each letter grade and write the numbers in a column on the blank piece of paper. Multiply each number by the weight the course was given, such as four points for an "A" and three points for a "B."

    • 3

Add all of the calculated course weights together. Add all of the grade points together for the classes taken. Divide the grade point number by the number for the course weights to get the cumulative grade point average for the semester.
